Guernsey hosts 2012 Olympic torch relay

The Bailiwick has been selected as part of the official Olympic torch relay, which will begin at Land's End, Cornwall, on 19 May 2012.
The torch will leave Land's End, Cornwall, on the morning of Saturday 19 May 2012 - the day after it arrives in the UK from Greece.
The relay is due to take up to an hour-and-a-half in the morning of 15 July, with surrounding celebrations and events expected to continue through the day.
The torch will travel to the island from Southampton and on to Jersey for the afternoon and Portsmouth the same evening.


The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Locog) said the Olympic flame would come within a one-hour journey of 95% of people in the UK. 
Thousands of people are expected to celebrate along the route, with shows and concerts planned on 66 of the 70 days.

Mike O'Hara, Culture and Leisure Minster, said: "It's absolutely amazing.

"It's wonderful we've been chosen out of only six islands in the UK."

The BBC plans to cover every single mile of the Olympic torch relay live, securing it a first for next year’s Games.

The Olympic flame’s journey around Britain starts on May 19 and ends at the Olympic Stadium in London on July 27.

Eight thousand people are being chosen as torch bearers for the 70-day event, which will showcase Britain’s towns and areas of outstanding beauty.

Synopsis: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh and final adventure in the Harry Potter film series, is a much-anticipated motion picture event to be told in two full-length parts.
